My unit of study that I created during EDU 202 directly aligns with the Maine Common Core Teaching Standard of Assessment. A unit of study structures the assessments we use throughout our teaching of concepts including the pre-assessments, formative assessments, and summative assessments. The unit of study also has clear learning goals, rubrics, and opportunities for students to reflect on their progress which helps them engage in their personal growth. With multiple assessments and lessons taking place during a unit, students can see the evidence of their learning from their early assignments to final projects, tests, and essays. Lastly, my unit of study will direct myself, as the teacher, to adjust pacing, differentiate instruction, and spend more time teaching challenging topics.

My unit of study and lesson plan helped me think through the process of teaching a unit and creating a lesson plan. I now have a firm grasp on the differences between and the importance of daily formative assessments versus summative assessments. Working in a PLC group with two history majors helped me practice incorporating historical events, such as World War II, into my English lessons to further student learning and engagement. I know how to follow the Bloom’s taxonomy chart to advance skills in chronological order when teaching. I can also break down standards into student-friendly language. This will help my students and I see the learning goals and determine if they are being reached or not. I see how several instructional strategies can be implemented to help my students learn in different ways. I put into practice using the think aloud, annotation, and think-pair-share strategy to help students learn during my lesson on contexualizing political, social, and economic vocabulary words. Going forward, I will be able to put myself in my students shoes to determine if a unit of study logically makes sense and is interesting. With the help of this assignment, I have a better understanding of the deep commitment and preperation required to smoothly and effectively teach a units of study in an English class.
